The duties are varied, and include specimen reception, entering patient data into the laboratory IT system, assisting with the laboratory handling of most types of specimens, printing out tissue cassettes ready for dissection sessions and receiving and sending material to other hospitals.
Other tasks include: preparing reagents, solutions and stains, daily maintenance of laboratory equipment, maintaining laboratory archive systems, cleaning laboratory equipment and general housekeeping tasks. There is a requirement to be able to lift heavy objects such as boxes and waste and to be able to push trolleys.
We require someone who is conscientious and capable of careful and accurate work with excellent customer care skills.
You should have previous laboratory experience but in house training will also be provided to the successful applicants. Basic science knowledge particularly chemistry and biology are needed for this role as is the basic knowledge to be able to safely handle hazardous chemicals. Good and accurate data entry skills are also required along with basic standards of numeracy and literacy.
The hours of work are 37.5 per week, to be worked over Monday to Friday inclusive and will involve some early starts or late finishes. There is occasional weekend work and you may be required to work at the Wigan sites. Standard or core working hours of the laboratory are 08:30 to 17:00.
