Job Description

The Operations Summer Intern will participate in manufacturing or engineering projects focused on using Lean Manufacturing techniques. Additionally, the intern will work independently reviewing business systems and collecting the necessary data to access the opportunities for improvement in their assigned product line. The intern will work on a wide range of optical applications and have broad-based exposure to various business areas including Engineering, Production Control, Finance, Integrated Supply Chain, and Manufacturing. Some project examples are listed below:

  • Creating reports using Microsoft Excel to drive on-time delivery
  • Reducing cycle time and/or customer lead time and increasing system throughput
  • Creating a database that automates HPU (Hours per Unit) tracking


  • Demonstrated experience with three of the following through internships, class projects, or related activities:
    • Technical problem solving
    • Information systems
    • Engineering interpretation of technical documentation
    • Team leadership
    • Project and risk management
    • Statistical process control
    • Lean manufacturing
    • Familiarity with Information systems
  • Coursework in either Lean Manufacturing or Statistical Process Control
  • U.S. Citizenship


  • Working towards a Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree from an ABET accredited engineering-related curriculum in a field such as Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science & Information Systems, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemistry, or Physics
  • Entering as a college Junior or Senior by Fall 2020


  • Engineering or Manufacturing knowledge gained through previous related employment
  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification
