We are seeking an Intern Co-op - R&D Undergrad
On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Learn and assist with the synthesis of novel materials for magnetic and ferroelectric composites via physical/chemical or 3D printing processes to support project needs
  • Learn and assist with testing magnetic material properties
  • Learn and assist with data collection, data analysis, computer/electronic interfacing, or computer modeling
  • Work effectively and responsibly in a research team and contribute towards a safe and secure laboratory working environment

Qualifications We Require

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Undergraduate student at an accredited university
  • Enrolled full time in the term immediately preceding the internship
  • Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
  • Registration with the university's co-op office
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week
  • U.S. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be pursuing a major in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or Electrical/Mechanical/Chemical Engineering or relevant degree field for project needs
  • A background and/or references that demonstrate good oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Functional knowledge and understanding of a suite of standard computer software skills, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

Qualifications We Desire

  • Relevant science or engineering coursework, teaching or lab experiences relevant for project needs
  • Relevant experience with working in a materials research laboratory demonstrating relevant materials synthesis (chemical or 3D printing) or materials testing/characterization skills
  • Experience or knowledge of BH analysis and magnetometry is highly desirable
  • Relevant experience in advanced computer interfacing, modeling or electronics

The Nanoscale Sciences Department conducts collaborative leading-edge research that advances the understanding of materials at the nanoscale and enables the collaborative development of creative solutions for Sandia's broad and evolving National Security and Energy Missions. Our research activities have broad impact; and typically generate peer-reviewed, high-profile journal publications and presentations at professional scientific meetings. Our main research focus is directed along three thrusts:1. Electrochemical Materials Science and Applications (including energy storage and corrosion)2. Magnetic, Dielectric and Electronic Materials Science and Applications (including ferroics and composites)3. Nanostructured Materials Science and Applications (i.e., for hazardous materials capture/storage, sensing, membranes, water treatment, and catalysis)
