We are currently seeking a Materials Scientist/Corrosion Engineer in Albany, OR to work onsite at the US-DOE operated National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL).

This Materials Scientist/Corrosion Engineer position provides support to corrosion research and development efforts related to the Natural Gas Infrastructure Program at NETL Albany, OR. As a member of an interdisciplinary team, the successful candidate is expected to perform applied research to understand and solve complex degradation issues. The position requires expertise on materials selection, chemistry, characterization, electrochemistry, and development of coating technologies for applications that include corrosion on the internal surfaces of iron or steel pipes used for natural gas transmission. Interested candidates must have an MS or Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Corrosion, Electrochemistry, or other relevant disciplines.

  • Contribute to ongoing technical work, primarily focused on the corrosion evaluation of a wide variety of materials under aqueous conditions in the presence of carbon dioxide (CO2) at ambient, and elevated temperatures and pressures.
  • Assist with the characterization of the structure and surface properties of metal alloys and their corrosion products as well as maintaining knowledge of current technologies.
  • Take an active role in the project by developing experimental design, electrochemical measurements, problem solving, data interpretation, report writing, and proposal preparation.
  • Proactively identify novel research opportunities to drive the fundamental understanding of substrate/coating interfaces.
  • Contribute to the completion of milestones associated with various core mission programs as well as fundamental research and development projects.
  • Lead collaborative research with other R&D areas internally and externally, e.g., alloy development, simulation, development of polymer barriers, among others.
  • Prepare technical reports, publish in relevant journals, present in conferences to disseminate research findings, activities, operations, and future initiatives to industry, academic and government stakeholders.
  • Maintain compliance with safety, security, and environmental regulations in performing job duties.
  • Participate in group meetings to discuss progress of research activities, communicate findings, and describe accomplishments in a regular basis.
  • MS or Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Corrosion, Electrochemistry, or other relevant disciplines.
  • Possess excellent communication and organization skills, laboratory experience, highly motivated, innovative, attention to detail, and able to conduct independent research relevant to the attainment of near and long-term goals.
  • Research experience with corrosion processes of metallic substrates, strong background knowledge of metallography, electrochemistry, hydrogen embrittlement, surface and microstructural analysis techniques, e.g., scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), among others.
  • Able to undertake multiple tasks and projects simultaneously and manage competing priorities efficiently and effectively.
  • Proven team player, with ability to build and maintain effective internal and external relationships as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Industrial Experience
  • Strong record of publications in the field
  • Experience and knowledge of mechanical properties testing and methods
  • Experience with high pressure electrochemistry apparatus and experimentation.
  • Experience with corrosion methods in extreme environments
