Position Summary:

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Student Intern. 

In this role, the successful candidate This position will assist the Research Laboratory Operations Manager with the collection and review of all related costs for animal care. This Individual will be responsible for collecting, organizing and reviewing data and processing the information as per the instructions of the Operations Manager for the cost accounting initiative within the NYU Winthrop Animal Care and Use program. This new initiative will allow the Division of Comparative Medicine to determine actual costs as they relate to animal care at NYU Winthrop. Candidate must possess strong organizational skills. Candidate must be very comfortable in Microsoft Excel and have at least a minimal level of comfort with databases.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Paper records will be collected, sorted by cost type, and entered into a central system according to business rules established by the Operations Manager. These will be invoices for consumable supplies (chemicals, bedding food, cleaning items), non-consumable supplies (cages, uniforms, caging accessories and material handling supplies), contracts for services and other miscellaneous items.
  • Analysis of the data will occur with every 3 months that are entered. After 3 full months of invoices have been entered, we will add all costs together and divided by the number of animal units present during this time to create daily unit cost. We will look at the data in different ways such as: Consumable cost per month or per animals, Non-consumable cost per month or per animal, labor costs spread across the time as well as the animal unit. Ability to follow business rules in order to make decisions on different data formats. The invoice may come in as one time charges, monthly or even yearly expenditures. The candidate will need to know how to apply these costs based on the business rules of Cost Accounting that I will supply to them. Some data may need to be entered into a database or an excel sheet. They will again consult the business rules to make that determination.
  • Provide reports as needed. We will produce reports on demand from requests by DCM and /or OSR leadership.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Is able to recognize problems as they occur; and through the application of appropriate policy/ procedure, determine and/or recommends the appropriate solution. Seeks guidance as necessary for the performance of duties asks appropriate questions when in doubt and utilizes reference sources/materials to endure accuracy. Advises appropriate personnel of situations/problems requiring intervention or follow-up attention

Minimum Qualifications:

To qualify you must have a Bachelors in Life Science field recommended but not required. A self-motivated individual that is detail-oriented, multi-tasker who can function both independently as well as part of a team is required. Excellent organization, time-management and record-keeping skills as well as outstanding interpersonal, customer-based and communication skills are essential. Previous experience within animal facilities helpful but not required. Effective oral and written communication skills required.

Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
