Thanks to recent technological advances, Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) devices will soon be available for research and development to both the academic community and the private sector. Despite being early prototypes, such devices will be capable of performing quantum computations that cannot be simulated by the largest classical supercomputers, and have thus the potential to become a disruptive technology. To unlock the potential of NISQ devices, NASA QuAIL is developing novel quantum/classical hybrid algorithms that can tackle complex computational problems.

We are looking for a candidate who has a deep understanding of state-of-the-art machine learning techniques, with the ability and desire to learn about quantum computation theory and applications. The potential candidate must have a strong engineering and technical background, especially in the field of machine learning, with at least 4 years programming expertise.

The potential candidate will be required to develop code for models that will be applied to problems in the field of quantum computation. The potential candidate is also encouraged to learn and understand enough quantum computation literature to run experiments in simulation and on quantum computing hardware. The potential candidate will be expected to be proactive in solving problems and engage with the team to bring the contribute to the general level of machine learning expertise in the group. 

Required Skills and Traits:

  • MS or BS in Natural Sciences (Physics and/or Mathematics)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Proficient in Python and Matlab
  • Experienced with Unix systems
  • Experience in programming with TensorFlow and/or other Machine Learning APIs
