An opportunity to develop deep and broad technical knowledge of cybersecurity and software development processes, while using your strong problem solving and communication skills to help and delight customers, and improve their security.

Based in Knutsford, Cheshire, PortSwigger Web Security is a global leader in the cybersecurity sector. Our cutting-edge software is used by over 17,000 customers in 130 countries to help them secure their web applications. Our educational and research output is used by millions of people globally to learn about web security.

We have recently expanded our range of products and services, and we are now looking for additional Technical Product Specialists to join our customer success team. This is a varied and challenging role with huge learning opportunities, leading to potential career paths in product management, penetration testing, or technical customer service.

We are a fun group of people from a diverse range of backgrounds, who pull together to produce amazing outcomes for our customers. We achieve this by continually investing in and supporting our people, giving them opportunities to flourish in our supportive and collaborative working environment.

About you

From an early age, you've had a strong personal interest in technology. You might love playing with gadgets, understanding how things work, and fixing them when they don't. You might invest time in understanding how technology can shape and revolutionize our lives.

Although you enjoy working on your own to solve a problem, you're also friendly and helpful. You thrive on interacting with others, and naturally get on with different kinds of people.

The challenge of helping businesses world-wide to improve their cyber security posture excites you. You love to learn, and relish the opportunity to find out more about software products, programming, or penetration testing, but you don't want to narrow down your career options at this stage.

At school, you were good at maths and science. You have an excellent academic record, with very strong A levels and degree, probably in a technical or scientific discipline.

You're patient, methodical, and dogged in pursuing a problem until you solve it. You'll take on any challenge, and always do your best to meet it.

You're careful and precise with your words, and you sometimes need to temper your pedantic instincts.

You take pleasure in helping and delighting others. In another life, you could have been an Apple Store Genius, a storyteller at a cool science museum, or a behind-the-scenes fixer at a posh hotel.

You need variety in your life. You can't face doing the same thing every day or every month.

Key responsibilities

Our technical customer success team is the key liaison point between our software developers, product management, researchers, and customers.

You will be involved in a wide variety of activities, including:

  • Speaking to customers to identify requirements for new features in our software.
  • Collaborating with software developers to understand product features and to pass on insights into how they are used by our customers in the real world.
  • Assisting customers with technical problems, helping them to get the most out of our products and learning resources to improve their overall security posture.
  • Investigating bug reports, by attempting to reproduce, diagnose, and where relevant fix issues that people run into.
  • Liaise with technical product managers to help prioritize software development work, championing the customer's perspective.
  • Keep your finger on the pulse of the latest cybersecurity issues our customers are grappling with, and work collaboratively with our in-house cybersecurity research team and Web Security Academy educators to pass on ideas for research and learning initiatives based on customer needs.

Essential skills

  • Communication. An excellent communicator, in both written and oral form. A clear and concise style, able to communicate complex technical concepts with precision. Ability to adapt communication style to a widely varied audience, from other technical specialists through to novices.
  • Problem solving. A methodical thinker, able to pursue open-ended investigations into obscure problems, and carry out your own research to obtain relevant knowledge. Tenacious and conscientious, willing to persevere with a challenging task through to completion.
  • Technology. A passion for technology in general, and an interest in learning more about the web and cybersecurity. A fast learner able to absorb information about a very broad range of technical topics and apply knowledge to new tasks as they arise.
  • Customer service. An instinctively helpful person who takes pleasure in solving other people's problems. A positive, can-do outlook, and a willingness to go the extra mile to delight customers beyond their expectations.

Desirable skills

Although not essential to the role, it would be beneficial to have some knowledge or interest in the following areas:

  • Cybersecurity.
  • Computer science.
  • Software development processes and methodologies.
  • System administration.
  • Networking technologies: switches, routers, firewalls, and VPNs.
  • Web application development.
  • One or more programming languages.

Be well rewarded

We firmly believe in paying people what they're worth to us, not just what we can get away with or what they could earn elsewhere. We pay excellent salaries above the normal market level, and this is always determined based on your individual skills and contribution.

In addition to a generous base salary, we offer share options and a comprehensive benefits package.
