There is an opportunity for a placement with the engineering team at Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe Ltd, based in either our London HQ. Placements will run 12 months starting in September 2019 and will be ideally suited for a students looking for a placement year. 

The Engineering teams support the maintenance and the repair activities of Gas Turbines and Steam Turbines. As well as managing established repair processes and tracking the operating regime and component re-use cycle. They are in involved in developing flexible and novel solutions to technical problems that arise. The intern will also gain experience of other departments (including commercial, procurement, business development and quality).This includes working with the commercial and procurement teams. 

The exact nature of the project or other work will vary depending on priorities at the time and the length of the internship, however, typical projects have included: 

  • Analysis of steam-turbine operating regimes, from remote-monitoring data of peak stresses, to help develop more flexible approaches to start-up and shut-down.
  • Failure analysis and investigations of site-specific components
  • Design of support equipment for fuel-nozzle repair
  • Metallurgical assessment of blades/vanes to develop an understanding of the remaining life and reparability.
  • The implementation of a model to predict operational time at temperature.
  • The assessment of repairs
  • Procurement of specialist site services
  • Managing responses to major international tenders. 

This position would suit a Mechanical Engineering student, but related degrees such as Aeronautics and Materials will also be considered. A course or specialisation in Gas Turbine Technology would be an advantage. 

There may be occasions when you are required to travel within the UK (for which you will be reimbursed).
