The Evolutions (Evoking Learning and Understanding through Investigations of the Natural Science) Afterschool Program is a free science and college-focused program that provides academic support and science career exploration for 120 students from New Haven and West Haven public school districts.. The program focuses on supplementing the formal school experience and encourages students to see themselves as college-bound, scientifically literate citizens. Throughout all four years of high school, students participate in weekly afterschool classes focused on science career exploration, transferable skill development, and college preparation. Together they form a community of STEM-focused, academically driven youth leaders, and represent a key Peabody Museum initiative to bring science and local neighborhoods together.

EVOLUTIONS students participate in hands-on science activities, experience field trips to colleges and universities, and conduct research to produce their own public exhibition on a science topic of their choice. Students also have opportunities for laboratory internships and participate in a youth employment program that provides training on exhibit interpretation. Students in EVOLUTIONS transition into the Sci.CORPS (Science Career Orientation and Readiness Program for Students) component of the program, which offers participants opportunities to develop a sophisticated set of communication and workplace skills. This program includes paid work experience in the Peabody Museum for these students . The Peabody Museum employs these students as interpreters in the galleries.

HOW TO APPLY EVOLUTIONS  is a  FREE  after school program for New Haven and West Haven public high school students. The recruitment and application process takes place in August and September of each year, and all freshmen and sophomores are eligible to apply, and we hope that students will remain in the program through their junior and senior year. WHO SHOULD APPLY? Any 9th or 10th grader in a New Haven or West Haven public school who is interested in science, wants some help preparing for college, or just needs something productive to do after school is invited to apply. We do not make selections based upon grades- we look for students who will be enthusiastic and dedicated to the program, and those who will benefit most from the services we have to offer. This is not a program that parents should sign their child up to do. We are looking for young adults who are serious about applying and who have a strong desire to participate. We are especially looking for students who will be first in their family to go to college. WHAT DOES THE PROGRAM OFFER? If accepted, you will be assigned to a class that takes place one day per week from 3:30-5:30 (but you can come over anytime after 2:00). During class we do science trivia, SAT practice, learn about college and careers, and do hands on activities and museum exhibit projects. We also have free tutoring services, SAT practice and college essay writing workshops, monthly events where we play games, eat pizza, and network with college students, and an annual 3-day out-of-state college trip. After one year in EVO, you can apply to work in the Sci.CORPS Youth Employment Program, where after 75 hours of community service, you can earn a paid position as Museum Interpreter. After two years, you can apply to do a paid summer lab internship with a Yale professor. Some of our graduates even work with the program during college. HOW DO I APPLY? Applications can be found on this page. You will be required to provide contact information for you and your parents/guardians, provide your grades from the previous school year (transcript not required), answer 7 essay questions, share your weekday availability, and provide 1 teacher references.
