Safety Assessment and Laboratory Animals Resources (SALAR) helps advance high quality drug candidates into development by defining the non–clinical safety and selectivity of lead compounds. SALAR employees evaluate Lead Op candidates and preclinical toxicity of drug development candidates, provide mechanistic understanding of drug-induced toxicity, and assess implications for human safety. SALAR provides collaborative research in animal model development, veterinary medical and animal care, and research facility management. Safety Assessment also responds to regulatory questions in support of drug registration.
Developmental and Reproductive Toxicology (DART)
A student with interest in developmental biology, toxicology, and/or alternatives to whole animal research will explore means to enhance the ability of current in vitro screening assays to predict developmental toxicity. Experiments will be conducted to identify causes of inaccurate predictions, and modifications to current screening approaches may be assessed for their utility in addressing those sources of discordance.
Pathology
As a summer intern in the Pathology group of SALAR, you will work in a results-driven Research & Development environment with a fun and highly collaborative team that develops image analysis solutions in the field of digital pathology. The intern will work with pathologists and pathology biologists to develop more quantitative approaches to traditional histopathology endpoints. Using specific animal models to study disease mechanisms and early therapeutic indications, the summer intern will help develop algorithms to better quantify the histopathology severity scoring process using pathology imaging software; this will result in a high-throughput, semi-automated and quantitative method to measure effects of various treatments in animal models. During the internship, students will gain valuable experience working with the image analysis team within the Pathology group, processing and analyzing digitized pathology whole slide images.
Key Responsibilities: Hands-on support of pathology whole slide image analysis tools and technology Working alongside image scientists in the digital pathology group to manage, prepare and analyze pathology whole slide images to support animal model semi-quantitative pathology scores. Performing analytics of associating image analysis results with response and survival data. Active participation in the testing of pathology image management and analysis systems, tools and technology.
Investigative Laboratory Science (ILS) LC-MS
The intern will work on one or more small projects and/or experiments that will leverage state-of-the-art LC-MS technology for metabolomic application in toxicology. The projects will require the use of Thermofisher LC-MS instruments and the software Compound Discoverer to process metabolomic profiling data. Day-to-day activities will likely include tasks that require sample preparation (plasma, urine, tissues), sample analysis using LC-MS platform, extensive time on data analysis and biochemical pathway analysis with a focus on metabolic changes due to drug dosing in preclinical models. Good understanding of chemistry, biochemistry, biochemical pathway, and some experience with computer database searching and/or building (small molecular metabolite database) will be a plus.
Required Education and Experience:
Candidates must currently be enrolled in a minimum of a BS/BA in: Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Toxicology, Pharmacology, Pharmacy, Chemical/Bio Engineering, Veterinary medicine or related discipline.
Candidates must be available to work full-time for up to (12) weeks beginning in May or June of 2020.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
Candidates should have a G.P.A of 3.0 or higher
Candidates should have strong analytical and communication skills
Candidates should have demonstrated ability to learn new technologies
For DART: Candidates should have a background in developmental biology, cell biology, toxicology. Previous laboratory experience not required but considered a plus
For Pathology: Works on algorithms and technologies to analyze histopathology images and data analysis. Image analysis and/or deep learning experience a plus. Experience and knowledge in imaging workflows and digital image analysis are preferred.
For ILS LC-MS: Candidates should have a background with programming languages, and be able to learn new technologies. Experience or familiarity with semantic technologies, such as text analytics and ontologies, is a plus
We are a research-driven biopharmaceutical company. Our mission is built on the simple premise that if we “follow the science” and that great medicines can make a significant impact to our world. And we believe that a research-driven enterprise dedicated to world-class science can succeed by inventing medicine and vaccine innovations that make a difference for patients across the globe.
