JOB SUMMARY We are currently seeking an Engineering Marine/Materials Intern for Summer Semester 2020. This position is located at the Florida Materials Research Facility in Ponce Inlet, FL. The site feature roughly 3-acres of beachfront exposure areas and 3-acres of field space along the Intracoastal waterway to allow for marine submergence and product testing. As an outside laboratory, this work requires roughly a 50/50 time split between field work and office duties. Candidates should be prepared for physical lifting, hot and cold temperatures, heavy exposure to sunlight, exposure to rain, and native flora/fauna. Candidates MUST have the ability to swim and be willing to perform in-water evaluations as needed. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES Supporting team members in developing and maintaining test apparatus, subsystems and/or components throughout test lifecycles Gaining hands-on experience through assembly and testing work at the facility Communicating results and progress using written and oral communication to the project team Participating in other facets of product development such as concept generation, prototyping, analysis, etc. as much as project workload and the candidate’s abilities allow THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED Sophomore standing or higher in a B.S. Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or related curriculum and currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited university Minimum of 3.0 GPA Experience with design, analysis, testing, and fabrication of mechanical and electro-mechanical components and systems Working understanding of materials interactions and basic corrosion knowledge Experience with standard lab equipment such as voltmeters, function generators, data loggers, etc. Experience working in a lab environment, including preparing, conducting, and documenting tests Excellent verbal and written communication skills Demonstrated initiative to be a self-starter with a desire to learn that extends beyond the classroom Proven ability to successfully work independently or as part of a larger team Proficiency with Microsoft Office software THE FOLLOWING IS DESIRED Previous internship or work experience in the engineering discipline is preferred Experience/desire to interact with the marine environment/marine species Basic knowledge of marine equipment, pumping systems, AC and DC electrical systems LEGAL DISCLAIMER The above statements are intended to describe the nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this job.
